Diane Hawkey

Clay Artist

Artist Statement:
I have been a professional artist for half my life and an unprofessional artist for the other half.

Largely self taught, except for time spent at the Oakland Community College Ceramic Technology Department. I work intuitively which gives me endless possibilities since no one has ever told me how things should be done.

I explore many mediums, primarily ceramics, but including hot glass work, found object assemblage, bead work and collage. Working in clay connects me to the earth and reminds me that everything I create is a collaboration between myself and some unseen energy that flows through all things.

My work explores nature, magic and the limitless possibilities of the dream world and imagination. My imagery sometimes comes directly from my dreams, and often is triggered by encounters with animals, both real and imaginary.
When people look at my work I would like to inspire them to think about their own relationship to the natural world and the earths energy.

My totems are my latest large scale work. Made originally to fit in a outdoor or garden setting, I see them as art compatible with the natural world, but found as often as not people were interested in keeping them indoors.

Along with my large scale work, I also create jewelry featuring my hand carved ceramic beads and flame worked glass with reverse painted vitreous enamel.
I like the intimate nature of creating and wearing beads and many of the pieces have a talisman like quality. My jewelry has been featured in Beadwork Magazine.

I live in the Detroit area with my husband, my daughter, 2 Boston terriers, 1 cat,
1 snail and 37 rosebushes.
