For
Pat Custer Denison art means painting. That doesn’t mean that she has
some tiresome, purist attitude about what defines a painting. She paints
with glazes on ceramic tiles and fires them in a kiln. Her unique pieces
often have
painted, shaped, wood framing and may incorporate found objects and 3D aspects.
Although her materials deviate from a typical painted canvas, she still considers
her work quite traditional. It is a painting to hang on the wall. Her sculpted
furniture is functional, but is still all about the painted image.
Pat Custer Denison has been a prolific, self employed, working artist since
her formal art training at the University of Michigan (1966-1970). She retains
and values an irreverent, outsider approach to her work, with no art speak
needed or allowed.
Denison rarely enters art shows and never chases commissions, public or private.
Her art is bought by enthusiastic private collectors who enjoy it in their
own houses. Her work becomes a friendly part of their daily lives.
Pat Custer Denison (b. 1948) married her high school sweetheart, Chip Denison
in 1970. A happy, stable marriage has given Pat a lot of peace to concentrate
in the studio. Since 1990, Chip has been working full time in the studio with
Pat, doing an extraordinary job of freeing Pat up from much of the labor intensive
work. His woodworking skills have encouraged Pat to develop her signature one
of a kind framing.
